Wedding Wine Bottle Labels

There’s one thing that all great weddings have in common (other than the all important “I do”, of course) - wine. Whether you’re a fan of red, white or rosé, a wedding is a great opportunity to let your hair down and indulge in a glass or two.

Wine makes a great welcome drink before the ceremony, and it’s the classic beverage to serve alongside your wedding breakfast. Sparkling wine - prosecco or, if you’re feeling fancy, champagne - is the perfect toasting drink, for guests to enjoy during the speeches.

If you’re serving wine at your wedding, why not make an impression on your guests by designing and applying your own wine bottle labels? Custom wine bottle labels are a great way to add a special, personal touch to your big day.

What Are Wine Bottle Labels?

Wine bottle labels are self-adhesive paper stickers that you can apply to the front of a wine bottle. All you need to do is remove the original label, stick your new customised label onto the bottle, and you’ll instantly add a bit of flair to your wedding breakfast. Wine bottle labels can also be used on champagne bottles, prosecco bottles, and any other cylindrical glass bottle (beer, cider, etc).

You can include almost any text you’d like on your wine bottle labels. Most commonly, wedding wine bottle labels include the bride and groom’s names, the wedding date, and a message of gratitude to your guests. Usually, the text is surrounded by a pretty motif, such as flowers. There are plenty of different designs available.

What Should I Put On My Wine Bottle Labels?

It’s up to you exactly what you’d like to include on your personalised wine bottle labels. But a as a general rule, most wedding wine bottle labels contain:

The newlywed’s names - for example “Sarah & Fred” or “Mr & Mrs Smith”

     Your wedding date

A message to your guests, or whoever you’re giving the wine to - for example, “Thank you for sharing our wedding day” or “Thank you for being my maid of honour”

You might also consider including information about the wine itself. Remember, you’ll have removed the original label in advance, so your guests might not know what type of wine is actually inside the bottle. It can be helpful to include something like “Cabernet Sauvignon, South Africa” so your guests know what to expect!

When Should I Order My Wine Bottle Labels?

Once you have approved the proof and finalised your order, we aim to get your items printed and sent to you within 5 working days. This may take a bit longer during busier times of the year.

To be on the safe side, we’d advise you to order your items as far in advance as possible - ideally, at least 6 weeks before your wedding. That way, if for any reason your items take a bit longer to arrive, or there is a problem, there’s plenty of time left to sort it out.

You should aim to have your bottles and labels ready at least a few days advance of your wedding. That way, you’ve got time to remove the old labels, affix the new ones in place, and have someone drop them off at your venue.

If you’re buying your own wine, be sure to check with your venue that it’s ok to bring in alcohol that wasn’t bought there. They may charge a corkage fee for this.

How to Apply Wine Bottle Labels Correctly

Your personalised wine bottle labels will arrive attached to a backing sheet, like stickers. They’re self-adhesive, so you won’t need to apply any glue or tape. But first, you’ll have to remove the pre-existing label.

Fill a large sink or bucket with water, and add a generous amount of baking soda or soda crystals. Fully sumberse the wine bottles in the liquid. The soda will help to break down the adhesive, making the labels easy to remove.

If you use warm water, it will only take 45 minutes. However, there’s a chance that warm water might affect the taste of the wine. The longer but safer method is to use cold water, but leave the wine bottles to soak overnight.

After soaking, you should be able to peel the labels off in one go. If there’s any glue residue left behind, simply wipe it away with a sponge or cloth.

Then, dry the bottles completely before applying your personalised wine labels. They won’t stick to a wet bottle, so be thorough. Simply peel the sticker off the backing paper, and press it gently onto the bottle.

You can’t remove or readjust wine labels after they’re stuck down, so ensure you’re holding the bottle completely straight while applying them. Then, your new custom-labelled wine bottles are ready to enjoy!
