A wedding cake topper is a small model which sits on top of your wedding cake. Traditionally, it comes in the form of a tiny bride and groom; but these days, you have lots more designs to choose from.
Cake toppers aren’t essential. They don’t help hold the cake together, they usually aren’t edible, and they don’t do anything; so, if you like, you could potentially do without one.
Instead, the point of a cake topper is decoration, pure and simple. You can use them as an extension of the wedding theme (e.g. a floral topper in a nature theme); you can have the figures be truly representative of you, either in the way they look or the way they’re posed; or, you could simply pick out a topper that you think is fun or even comical.
In addition, most people think of cake toppers as mementos. Beginning in the 1950s, couples started using cake toppers to symbolize their togetherness, and would keep them afterwards to remind them of their special day.
The answer to this question, as with anything wedding-related, is that it’s up to you. You don’t ‘need’ to do anything at your wedding that you don’t want to do. So, you can choose to save a little time, effort and money and not get one.
Of course, you’ll have one less memento of your wedding day. But if you already have lots of them, that may not be an issue for you. If you’re not sure, consider whether:
- The cake is particularly important for you. For some couples, a big, impressive cake is one of the hallmarks of a wedding day. If that’s what you think too, then not having a topper would be an unusual choice.
- You’ve fully checked how much they cost. Cake toppers can cost up hundreds of pounds, or can be picked up for less than £5. So, you may be saving less money than you think in not getting one.
- You even plan on having a cake. Many couples don’t have one these days, and if you’re not going to, then you won’t need a topper either.
Consult with your partner to see what you both think, do some research, and then come to the solution that makes you the happiest.
The original wedding cake toppers were all the same: they would feature a bride in a white dress, often clutching a bouquet of flowers, and a groom in a black suit. But over the years, cake toppers became more and more different. Today, you can get personalised cake toppers just for you.
One kind of personalised cake topper you can get is a matching set of figures, but which are made to look like you. These are normally made from polymer clay which is moulded into shape by hand. The artist can personalise the clothes, face and more to make them look like you.
Alternatively, you can get more abstract cake toppers personalised with your own text. Take our engraved heart shaped cake topper, for example. You can:
- Pick a motif (logo) of your choice to be engraved into it. This can be anything you like, so the topper can be personalised perfectly for your reception.
- Put your names and the wedding date on it. Alternatively, you can pick any two lines of wording saying anything you like at up to 25 characters per line.
The topper itself is made from acrylic, so is durable and long-lasting. There are over fifty preset motif designs for you to choose from, too, so there’s almost guaranteed to be one to suit you.
Cake toppers are made from many different materials. The most common are acrylic, wood and porcelain. You can find toppers made from each of these materials in our online store.
The material used depends on the theme, and what the cake topper represents. Any kind of text (e.g. ‘Just Married’ or ‘Mr & Mrs’) is usually acrylic, because this is easiest to shape into complex flowing fonts. But a statue of a bride and groom is more likely to be porcelain.
If you’d like to buy a specialist hand-made personalised pair of figures, then they’re likely to be made from polymer clay. Also known as modelling clay, this can be shaped and formed and then baked like regular clay. Artists use it to make personalised cake toppers to order. It’s 100% non-toxic and should last as long as regular porcelain.
In some cases, the bakery that bakes your cake can also provide the topper. They may have a basic range for you to choose from, or they may order a cake topper of your choice. This isn’t unusual, because bakeries will decorate the cake in every other way, e.g. with sparklers, decor sheets wrapped around the sides, ribbons and more.
To find out whether yours will, you’ll have to ask them specifically. You can either call them or visit them in person, if you’re ordering your cake from a bricks-and-mortar bakery.
Alternatively, if you want everything at your reception to be just-so, then you can order your cake topper yourself. You can buy it from a High Street wedding store, or from an online store like ours. Shop around to see what kind of prices you can expect to pay, and how much variety there is on offer.
As a rule, cake toppers aren’t edible. You can buy ones that are, but the ones in the Bride & Groom online store aren’t. The idea is that you put the cake topper to one side after you cut the cake rather than eating it.
If you would like a cake topper that is edible, talk to the bakery or caterer that’s supplying your cake. They may be able to help you. Different kinds of edible cake toppers include pictures printed on icing and fondant sculptures.
Whether you want to buy an edible cake topper is up to you. While it’s cute to eat your topper along with the rest of your cake, you can’t keep it afterwards as a memento. So, there are pros and cons to doing so.
A wedding cake topper can last forever if you care for it properly. Ones made from porcelain are especially long lasting, and make great mantelpiece ornaments for your home.
If you want to keep your cake topper after your wedding, wipe it clean with a napkin after you cut your cake. Then, as soon as you can, clean it properly with soap and water and allow it to dry just as you would wash anything else. This will keep your cake topper in tip-top condition.
You can then keep your cake topper as an ornament either in a cabinet or on a mantelpiece. Or, you can do what some couples do, and plan to use it as an heirloom: if your children get married, they could use the same cake topper that you used.
There is no wrong time to order a cake topper, although it might be a good idea to wait until you know what you’re wearing, and what colour scheme your wedding will be. If you wait until you’ve bought your dress or suit, then you can buy a cake topper to match.
But as is the case for most things wedding-related, perhaps the better idea is to buy and/or arrange everything as soon as possible. The further in advance you organise everything, the less stressed out you’ll be by the time your wedding date is looming.
Whatever the theme of your wedding, there’s likely to be a topper to suit your taste. Porcelain figures are a great example of this: for a formal wedding, you can have pretty and elegant figures like these. Or, you could get more ‘jokey’ brides and grooms—whatever you prefer.
For a rustic wedding, wooden toppers look great. And, of course, you can buy them in different colours to suit the colour scheme of your wedding reception and/or cake. An example might be buying a bride figure with a particular colour of dress which suits your colour scheme.
If you’re not sure what kind of topper might be best for you, take a look at our online store and see if anything takes your fancy. We have designs to suit any theme, and suitable for any budget. Our best value decorations cost just £2.19, and we offer personalised toppers too.
